4/07/17 - Spiritual Support for Existential Suffering

The aim of the Master Class is to raise awareness of spiritual distress in the dying person and to explore ways of being with someone in spiritual or existential distress.
- Raising your awareness of existential distress in the dying
- Expanding your understanding of the philosophical aspects
- Using this philosophical framework, exploring who you are and your own world view
- Enhancing ways of being alongside someone in existential distress
- Using spiritual support in the search for meaning
- Opportunity to practice

This Masters class is an extension to the HNZ Foundations of Spiritual Care and HNZ Fundamentals of Palliative Care with a particular focus on people who are dying in existential distress
Some of the background to existential distress will be explored with reference to the philosophical origins. As what gives life meaning is a big part of this philosophy, it is hoped that the reason for using spiritual support will become clear
There will be opportunity to explore some of our existential ideas about who we are and our own world views
In the second half of the morning some brief descriptions of ways we might be with someone in existential distress will be offered using some introductory existential therapy. There will be an opportunity to practice your skills so you may like to bring an example of a personal or work experience

1/08/17 - Culturally Responsive Palliative Care

The aim of the Master Class is to raise awareness of how cultural beliefs and practices affect our approach to death and dying
