Calling All Green Fingers

Heroic Gardens FestivalGarden lovers who purchase a ticket for the Heroic Gardens Festival this year will not only be able to view 23 different gardens across Auckland, they will also be supporting Mercy Hospice, Auckland.

The Festival was first held in 1997 and has become a yearly event, donating more than $415,000 to charity. Mercy Hospice Auckland's chief executive officer, Ms. Jan Nichol says while she would admit to having green fingers she is relieved the tour doesn’t include her place as one of the stops.

"I do enjoy gardening but to open it to the public would be a daunting thought for me. It is just fantastic so many people have generously offered their gardens to be included. We certainly hope people will make the most of the opportunity to be inspired, while at the same time supporting Mercy Hospice Auckland."

The proceeds Mercy Hospice Auckland receives will be dependent on ticket sales.

"I saw the official programme today and I was stunned at how beautiful and diverse the gardens are. In fact it isn’t only about the gardens with the sculpture and water features, including swimming pools, it’s really about enjoying life in your backyard. I only wish mine looked like one of these."

Being Auckland and summertime the gardens on show have a sub-tropical theme, many of which have starred in magazines and on television. A large number of the garden owners will be available to speak with viewers and are happy to answer any questions. Cafes, raffles, sculpture and plant sales will again be part of the Festival.

The festival is over two days, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 March and gardens can be visited on one or both days from 10am-6pm, a ticket costs $30. For more information and ticket sales please visit www.heroicgardens.org.nz or contact Verity on 361 5966.
