Together We Can Help Stuart Reach His Goal
Stuart Anderson has two goals for his Coast to Coast challenge- to complete the gruelling multi-sport event and to raise $5000 to go towards the care of his Aunty Min, who is an inspirational patient of Mercy Hospice Auckland.
Starting at Kumara Beach on the West Coast of the South Island, for the better part of two days Stuart will be running 36km, cycling 140km and kayaking 67km to the finish line at Sumner Beach on the East Coast.
"How often can you say you've gone from the West Coast of New Zealand to the East Coast under your own power," says Stuart who is currently training for the event which takes place in February next year.
Although the training is hard and often involves early morning starts, Stuart thinks of Minnie and the challenges she faces as motivation to keep going.
"Thinking of how Minnie manages herself under the illness gives me strength. In the big picture, no matter what I go through on the day, I know I will recover, I will feel better. Min fights a daily challenge, and she does it with such dignity. She's an incredible inspiration."
We think Minnie's an inspiration too. You may remember her story from our February newsletter where she talked about her family, the importance of continuing to enjoy life and the challenges her condition (Multiple System Atrophy) presents her with everyday.
Stuart's fundraising effort will go towards the cost of care Minnie receives and has seen him raise nearly $1500 through his fundraise online page.
"The fundraising is about my Aunty Min and it's about Mercy Hospice and how they are helping a treasured member of our family. The people at the hospice are talked about so highly by both Peter [Minnie's partner] and Min; it's a pleasure to use the event and my journey to raise awareness and funds for the work hospice does."
Mercy Hospice is right behind your Stuart, and wishes you all the best for your amazing challenge.
