Past, present and future art project continues to grow at Mercy Hospice Auckland

Jan Nichols, CEO Mercy Hospice Auckland with Simon Smith, Barfoot & Thompson

It was early 2009 that we started working with Bob Steiner to develop the Past, Present and Future tiles to be displayed in the courtyard at the hospice. Ever since, we have regularly witnessed the comfort and value that sponsoring a tile has provided for families and friends.

Consequently, we are pleased that growing interest in the tiles means that we have to commission a third panel of tiles. Again, each tile will combine into a distinctive piece of New Zealand art. Each tile represents either the memory of a particular person or the contribution made by individuals, families or companies to the future service of Mercy Hospice.

Some of the first tiles on the new panel have already been purchased by Libby White in memory of her friend Megan Brownhill. Working with Megan’s Sister-in-Law, Lorraine Merrick, they took the initiative and organised a special film night in memory of Megan. Libby decided that the gifts received on the night should be used for a permanent memorial for Megan and, as a result, has reserved four fantails and a kawakawa leaf in the new display.

Last June, those supporters of ours who have pledged to remember Mercy Hospice in their wills and opted to join the Mercy Quest group, gathered to choose a complimentary tile. For this group, the theme of Past, Present and Future was particularly relevant.

Also recently, those staff of Barfoot & Thompson who had been touched by the work of hospice, donated money to purchase three tiles. Simon Smith, who has had first hand experience of our work, represented the other staff. He is pictured making their donation after choosing their tiles.
