Former All Black Allan Whetton, whose mother died of cancer two years ago, spoke about how hospice helped her manage pain and support the family during her illness.
The Hospice Cuppa will run through Hospice Appeal week from May 14 to 18.
The initiative is open to all members of the public who want to host an event for friends and family to raise awareness and money for the organisation.
Free tea will be provided by Dilmah and L'affare will provide coffee. The only prerequisite is that guests give a donation.
Auckland Hospices provide care to people who live with life limiting illnesses and support their families.
It will cost around $75 million to keep the 34 hospices across the country running in 2012. Although the organisation receives government funding, the shortfall comes to around $30m.
Hospice workers made 155,000 home visits to those suffering from life-limited illnesses in 2011.
