During the first lockdown, the inpatient unit (IPU) at Mercy Hospice was home to a 40-year-old Cook Island Māori, Tahitian man called Wilfred, but to everyone he met, he was ‘Wongs’.

With his family based in Tahiti and Rarotonga, Wongs spent his early years in New Zealand, either in care or on the streets. During his teens, he suffered a head injury, and as his health deteriorated, he struggled to feel comfortable in care.

Houspice Update

The Houspice Project raises $150,000!

The Houspice Project is a fairy story come true that started over two years ago. Maria Ryder, one of the Friends of Mercy (FOM), was enjoying a drink with her friend John Penny of Penny Homes, explaining how their role is to help Mercy raise the millions needed to continue to provide its service.

Mercy Hospice Ponsonby shop moves after 16 years

After 16 years the well-known local Mercy Hospice shop located at 300 Ponsonby Road has moved to its new abode, and luckily, it’s just a short stroll down the road to 346 Ponsonby Road.

Introducing Luca

Luca Bree has lived beside Grey Lynn Park for almost forty years and has seen many changes in that time. As an enthusiastic op shopper and single parent on a tight budget he was very pleased when the Ponsonby Hospice Shop opened, quickly becoming a regular customer.
